The Faculty of Arts and Culture (FAC) at the South Eastern University of Sri Lanka (SEUSL) successfully hosted its 12th International Arts Research Symposium (SEUIARS – 2026) on March 31, 2026. Held at the Faculty’s Arts Theatre, the symposium centered on the timely theme: "Transformation through Digitalization: Pathways to a Connected Future." The event was chaired by Prof. MM. Fazil, Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Culture. The proceedings commenced with a warm welcome from Dr. CMM. Mansoor, the Conference Coordinator, followed by the Chairman’s address.

Vice-Chancellor’s Address: Research for Social Impact:

The Vice-Chancellor of SEUSL, Professor Dr. S.M. Junaideen, delivered a convincing address, characterizing the symposium as a premier academic platform that honors the university’s long-standing educational traditions. He noted that the convergence of local and international researchers at SEUIARS serves to significantly strengthen global knowledge exchange and institutional collaborations.

Addressing the 2026 theme, the Vice-Chancellor remarked:

"In an era where digital technologies are revolutionizing every sector—from education to culture and communication—the focus of this year's symposium is profoundly relevant. However, we must remain vigilant in preserving human values and cultural identities alongside these rapid digital advancements."

He further urged the academic community to pivot toward impactful scholarship, stressing that research should not be viewed merely as a vehicle for career promotion. Instead, he emphasized that academic inquiry must be designed to solve real-world societal problems, with a particular focus on addressing local challenges, indigenous cultures, and social integration.

International Perspectives on Digitalization:

The keynote address was delivered by Professor Ainol Madziah Binti Zubairi of the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM). Professor Zubairi provided an in-depth analysis of the symposium’s theme, sharing valuable insights and best practices from the digitalization of the Malaysian educational system. Her address highlighted the parallels and opportunities for Sri Lankan higher education in a globalized digital landscape.

A Rigorous Academic Selection:

Reflecting the high academic standards of the conference, the organizing committee received 160 research papers across eight specialized tracks. Following a rigorous peer-review and evaluation process, 110 papers were accepted for presentation.

The symposium saw vibrant participation from a diverse assembly of stakeholders, including Deans of Faculties, Heads of Departments, senior professors, local and international scholars, practitioners, and administrative staff. The 12th SEUIARS once again highlighted SEUSL’s commitment to fostering a multidisciplinary research culture that bridges global theories with local needs, ultimately enhancing the quality of local journals and academic discourse.
