Inauguration Ceremony of The Induction Program for Academic Staff of SEUSL 2014/Apr/08

INAUGURATION CEREMONY OF THE
INDUCTION PROGRAM

for Academic Staff of SEUSL
who are awaiting to obtain confirmation

The Staff Development Centre of the South Eastern University of Sri Lanka marks the next milestone by establishing the Induction Program (Staff Development Program) at South Eastern University of Sri Lanka for Academic Staff who are awaiting to obtain confirmation.

You are well aware that Induction of a new academic recruit into the University System has become an indispensable component in the endeavor of building the career path of an academic employee. Going along with this principle, the UGC has declared that successful completion of an induction program is compulsory for all academic recruits to obtain confirmation.

As such, our lecturers from South Eastern University of Sri Lanka went to universities like Peradeniya, Colombo, Kelaniya and Eastern University to follow this course up to date and also University has been paying around Rs. 25,000.00 per head for our lecturers to follow this course.

This situation has now been changed. University Grants Commission has given green light for us also to conduct the same course in our university. In this respect, today we here inaugurate the Induction Program officially and we have saved our university money and time.

This program is conducted by the Staff Development Center of our University for the first time in our University. I am very happy to announce that since it is a first time, the program is undertaken under the HETC funding. This time staff from our university only are enrolled as participants of this program through the internal advertisement.

However, next time, we have planned to go for open advertisement and intake participants from other universities as well.

Continuous support and encouragement from our Vice Chancellor made us to get financial support under HETC project to host this program successfully at our Staff Development Centre. Therefore I extend my heartfelt thanks and gratitude for our Vice Chancellor.

Likewise several other people also contributed to start this program at South Eastern University of Sri Lanka. In this respect, Prof. H. Abeygunawardena, Chairman of Standing Committee on Staff Development and Dr. Gominda Ponnamperuma, Consultant for Short term training, HETC Project gave us their fullest support in numerous ways to undertake this program. Therefore I take this opportunity to thank them.

Earlier Universities which were running this Induction Course have their own syllabi and modules and these are different from each one.

Hence, Standing Committee on Staff Development of University Grants Commission decided to bring all the Induction Program under one umbrella and prepared common training manuals. So that uniformity is maintained by all the universities.

We have invited such people who prepared so called training manuals as resource persons for this program. I hope you are lucky staff to have such experts to train you. They are Prof. H. Abeygunawardena, Chairperson to the Standing Committee on Staff Development, Prof. Deepthi C. Bandara, Former Director to the Staff Development Centre, University of Peradeniya, Dr. Gominda Ponnamperuma, Consultant, Short Term Training, HETC Project, Dr. B.M.K. Perera, Director, Career Guidance Unit, University of Peradeniya, Dr. Heshan Wickramasooriya, Senior Lecturer, University of Peradeniya, and In this respect we have got Dr. Wijeya Jeyatilake from University of Peradeniya as a resource person for the first week session which is scheduled to be held on 11th & 12th of April, 2014 from 8.30 a.m. to 5.30 p.m.

Here I have to point out one thing that Mr. MAM. Sameem, Lecturer extended his kind support to interact with such expert and to invite them to this program. So, I take this opportunity to express my sincere thanks to Sameem also.

I would like to further to note that the total program would be of 150 hours duration. The curriculum consists of the ten modules. Each modules is assigned a specific number of hours which comprises of time in face to face interaction and time for independent learning and assignments. Time has been included for an opening and closing ceremony as well to make it an all-inclusive training program. This program will be conducted two or three days in a week, which is Friday/ Saturday/ Sunday. It is compulsory for participants to have more than 80% attendance to complete this program successfully and such people only will be awarded with certificate. I hope you will comply with this ground rule.

Our Vice Chancellor, Dr. S.M. Mohamed Ismail, with ministers and high-ranking officers from 16 countries, in Brunei Dialogue hosted by the Universiti Brunei Darussalam2014/Feb/06

Highly Productive First Brunei Dialogue

UBD Vice-Chancellor Dato Paduka Dr Haji Zulkarnain bin Haji Hanafi delivering his welcoming remarks

It's not often that university presidents get the chance to talk frankly off-the-record about their challenges, successes and failures to their peers. The Brunei Dialogue, proposed by APRU and hosted by the Universiti Brunei Darussalam on its campus June 3-4, had a simple design. Case studies were presented by four presidents from the Asia and Pacific region who outlined the challenges they faced on taking up their jobs and attempted to transform their universities towards excellence. The 22 participants discussed how they would recommend tackling these issues. The four presenters then completed their case studies showing how they dealt with their circumstances and moved their universities to a new stage of development.

Facilitated by former World Bank expert in tertiary education and author of two books on 'world class' universities, Dr Jamil Salmi, the presidents from 16 countries expressed their appreciation of the Dialogue.

'It engaged us in examination of real issues and problems,' said one, 'and it resonated so much with my own situation'.

Another president noted that the Dialogue avoided the pitfalls of leadership meetings where a business school dean tells you best practices but has never done it himself - or the leader of a top university, which is actually far less complex to run because it is well-resourced in a stable social and political environment, speaks down to you about what to do.

Participants called for the four studies to be published.

The Brunei Dialogue also broke new ground by inviting presidents from Middle East universities, beginning the process of building stronger relationships among university leaders from both regions.

The Dialogue was opened by HRH Prince 'Abdul Malik, son of the Sultan of Brunei, in front of an audience of ministers, ambassadors, education leaders and participants. Dr Zulkarnain, Vice Chancellor of UBD and Permanent Secretary (Higher Education), and Dr Christopher Tremewan, APRU Secretary General, also spoke at the opening to welcome guests and participants and to outline the purpose of the event.

HRH Prince 'Abdul Malik in a group photo with ministers and other high-ranking officers

APRU presidents who attended included Dr Tony Chan (HKUST), Dr Sergey Ivanets (FEFU), Prof Ghauth Jasmon (UM), Dr Alfredo Pascual (UP). Dr. Rajesh Chandra, Vice-Chancellor and President of the University of South Pacific, and Dr Sultan T Abu-Orabi, Secretary General of the Association of Arab Universities, and formerly president of three universities in Jordan, also attended.
