The academic environment of the FAS consists of physical and human resources with several departments, laboratory facilities and other academic infrastructure. It has 5 departments:

Science Research Centre

Science Education Centre

The Science Education Centre, FAS (SECFAS) links the faculty and education community to achieve expected services and makes it easy to handle all related activities. The SECFAS provides the best institutional opportunity to actualize and maintain productive connections between the community and the university. The SECFAS will be a powerful mechanism for engaging students, faculty, and staff across faculty with the university, the state, their disciplines and professions, and their own learning and career development processes.
Aim: Promoting and assisting science education and dissemination of scientific knowledge in the southeastern region of Sri Lanka.
Objectives:
- To facilitate science teachers in using effective methods to teach science.
- To enrich the school curriculum by providing valuable hands-on learning experiences.
- To conduct seminars and practical sessions for teachers and students.
- To organize motivational programs such as science camps, quiz competitions, etc.
- To publish science monographs, books, etc.
- To carry out possible programs requested by educational sectors in this region, as well as other parts of the country.

Industrial Training Cell

Industrial Training Cell (ITC) of the Faculty of Applied Sciences (FAS) was established in 2018, with prime objective of producing science graduates who are skilled in variety of industrial activities specified by the Sri Lankan industries by exposing them to the actual working environments. The ITC organizes industrial training for the students, who have registered for the course of Intensive Industrial Training (IIE 32262) by linking with the relevant industries. This course is offered as an elective course in the second semester of level III for the general degree students. The main objective of the course is to enhance the employability of the FAS general degree holders. The training will be provided for a period of minimum 8- weeks and monitored by the ITC. All the details of the course of IIE 32052 (e.g. eligibility, placement, assessment method etc.) are available in ‘Guidelines for Intensive Industrial Training’ issued by the ITC.

Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC)

The IQAC of the faculty is one unit, coming under the perview of Quality Assurance Council (QAC) of the university. The Dean is the chairman of IQAC and the faculty coordinator for QAC functions as the secretary. The other members are the heads of the departments, few selected senior academics and two student representatives. The major fuction of the IQAC is to contribute to the quality enhancement of the academic programmes of the faculty. For which it collects stdudents feedback after each course, peer review of the lecturers, collects reports from examiners (after moderation of question papers and second marking of answer scripts). It also contributes to the Institutional reviews and Program reviews, done by UGC.

Centre for Soil and Water Research (CSWR)

This is the first centre/unit established at FAS (and even in the entire south eastern region of Sri Lanka) in 2004 with external supports (especially INGOs) by Mr. MF Nawas and Mr. EMJM Rizvi, to start a research culture at the faculty, when there were hardly any facilities available for research. There were some others, both non-academics and even students supported at the beginning. Soon after Tsunami, the CSWR was actively involved in community services, analysisng affected water wells, providing services to INGS, who had engaged in humanitarian services. Although, its fuctions are very much limited in the recent past due to various unavaoidable reasons, with increasing academics at FAS with sound research exposure, and a large number of honours degree and post-graduate degree students, it resumes its activities again. At present, the CSWR is located at the Department of Chemical Sciences (Laboratories).
