Inauguration Ceremony of the Orientation Programme for New Students - 2017/2018


The inaugural ceremony was held on 13.2.2019 in the auditorium of the Faculty of Islamic Studies and Arabic Language (FIA). Prof. MMM. Najim, the Vice Chancellor of South Eastern University of Sri Lanka graced the occasion as the chief guest. The Heads of the departments, Dr. MIM. Jazeel and Dr. AR. Nasar, Senior Lectures, the Assistant Registrar, Academic and non-academic staff members of the faculty and representatives of the second year students were present. Dr. AGM. Thariq, the Dean of the Faculty of Technology also graced the occasion.

Prof. MSM. Jalaldeen delivered the welcome address. The chief guest, Prof. Najim talked about the needs of the society and the country specially that a void exists in our society for emerging leaders at all levels and also pointed out the facilities and resources available in the institution to gain all rounded education. The three core values of FIA were clearly explained by Dr. SMM. Mazahir, the Dean/FIA. The first about the significance of Ikhlaas, the second about punctuality and the last about the need for cohesion within the Faculty. The overall message given was about their commitment in being united in diversity. Dr. AR. Nasar, the Head, Dept. of Arabic Language briefed the challenges and the expectations of the society. Dr. MIM. Jazeel, the Head, Dept. of Islamic Studies enlightened the students about civic consciousness and their responsibility in creating a positive perception of the minority Muslims in a multi-ethnic pluralistic society.

One of the main items was the initiative taken to declare FIA as a 'Ragging Free' Faculty. A representative of the second year welcomed the freshers and declared their stance as anti- raggers by swearing an oath in public. Their declaration was

"I swear the following oath on behalf of the students of the academic year 2016/2017 of the Faculty of Islamic Studies and Arabic Language of South Eastern University of Sri Lanka.

I Welcome and extend our wishes to the freshers of academic year 2017/2018 who will be joining our Faculty of Islamic Studies and Arabic Language of South Eastern University of Sri Lanka.

We swear by Almighty God that we will not indulge or support any form of physical ragging or verbal abuse which would cause physical or psychological harm or raise fear or apprehension to adversely affect their physical and mental well-being. Instead, we will guide the freshers to enhance their education, spirituality, moral values and personality development. We will also extend our fullest support to make them valuable citizens for our community and our motherland.

We also affirm to the government of Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, the Ministry of Higher Education, the University Grants Commission and the Administration of South Eastern University of Sri Lanka that we declare the Faculty of Islamic Studies and Arabic Language as a "ragging free faculty" and would strive hard to ensure that no ragging takes place in future|.

The inaugural session came to an end with the vote of thanks proposed by Mr. AM. Razick, Senior Lecturer and the Coordinator of Orientation Program, 2017/2018.
